Lock a specific drive with password using BitLocker

We all the computer users have some personal data, that is so sensitive and not shareable with others. But sometimes, we may have to share our computer with our friends and/or family members. That's why we need to hide and/or lock our personal data.

Some computer users hide their files and/or folders normally following the very common ways. But it doesn't ensure the security at all.

Some other people also use third party folder locker software to lock the files and folders. This is also not the perfect way of hiding and/or locking the data. Because, after re-installing the operating system the data will be unlocked and accessible for all.

In this case you may try BitLocker available with all of the latest version of windows operating systems. Using BitLocker you can lock a drive with password. During turning on BitLocker you will be asked to provide a password and later no one will be able to access the data stored in that locked drive.

But if you have only one partition in your hard disk drive, then you shouldn't try BitLocker. In this case you can lock your data using WinMend folder locker software. However, let's see how to lock a drive turning on BitLocker.

N.B. You may also keep safe your data without using any software.
Also, hide a drive of the HDD without any software.

Step 01  Open the windows explorer
Press Windows Key+E buttons together, the windows explorer will open. Now decide which drive you want to lock with password.  Then make a right click on your selected drive, a menu will open. Now find out Turn on BitLocker... and click on that.

N.B. If there is only one dive in your computer then you should not lock the drive.
Hide a dirve of your hard disk with password. This is called data encryption availabe in windows vista, windows 7 and widows 8
Step 02  Right click on your expected drive
After clicking on Turn on BitLocker, a pop-up window will open as like as the image given below. Now check the box where is written Use a password to unlock the drive and provide your expected password here into the first text input box where is written Type your password. Again retype the same password in the second text input box where is written Retype your password.

Then click on the Next Button or press the Enter Key from your keyboard to continue the process. Soon another new pop-up window will open with three options. Click on the middle one where is written Save the recovery key to a file and again click on Next Button.

Step 03  Save the recovery data key
In this step you have to click on Save to save the recovery key to a file. If you fail to save your recovery data key to a file, then you may try to save the recovery key to a flash drive (for example Pendrive, USB HDD etc.) because you will need it if you forget your BitLocker password. Now click on Save.

Step 04  Now encrypt the drive
Click on Start Encrypting to start the encryption. It will take a few minutes to complete the encryption depending on the data size. After completing the encryption you need to click on Close. The Drive Icon will look like the image given below after encryption.
Thus you may lock the drives one by one if you want.
